The project comprised the study of (8) track roads existing within a total corridor length of 71 km. Upon subsequent design the length of track road was actually 140 km due to the numerous "hair-pin" bends required to achieved an acceptable vertical grade (up to 15%). The track roads are located in various locations within the Northern Hajar mountains, with the purpose to provide safer access to remote villages. The project had a budget that would only allow the minimum standards. The project was challenging in that numerous alignment iterations were carried out to achieve the optimum cut and fill.
1) Renardet identified the project by site visits with the local leader of the village and a representative of the Ministry to define the start and end points for each track road
2) A survey boundary was established and the survey sub-contractor commissioned to carry out aerial survey using a drone (UAV)
3) Renardet created DTMs and base mapping for the study and design. Using highway design software "Prost" a process of evaluating different alignments in consultation with the Client was carried out. To achieve the final design output a balance between cost and acceptable standards was achieved
4) The designs were finalised and tender documents comprising Prime Document, Specifications, Drawings and Bill of Quantities were completed
