Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) awarded the design and construction for the upgrade of three regional airports to M/s. Galfar Engineering and Contracting Co. They in turn appointed Renardet S.A., Consulting Engineers in association with Africon, South Africa to perform the design part of the works. These Airports are Fahud, Marmul and Qarn Alam are located about 500 km away from Muscat. All three airports are designed to accommodate B737 aircraft types or similar. The runway geometry has to comply with ICAO standards and recommendations for code 4C non-instrument runway. The pavement structure of runways, taxiways and aprons will be designed to provide a bearing capacity for a given number of anticipated aircraft movements over a period of 20 years.
