     Oman

  • Client Name:

     Muscat Municipality

  • Narrative Description of the Project:

Since 1970, Muscat Governorate has developed at extremely rapid rate along the northern Coast, from Muttrah to Seeb. More recently, additional developments occurred also along the Eastern coast, as well from Muscat to Al Bustan, or in Al Amerat or Quryat areas. Most of the recent development took place in flood plain areas, mainly in the coastal plain. The road network with major axis along east-west direction is crossing the flow of every wadi, and both the bridges and existing drainage systems do not cater the natural flows of these wadis. Increasing impervious surfaces (roofs, roads, parks, etc.) are generating additional drainage problems in the entire area, as the provisions for drainage do not meet with new unrestricted flow conditions. It had been recently proved (April 2003, February 2006) that major disruption of traffic and communications may occur even for rainfall events of limited return period. Muscat municipality (MM) therefore decided to handle efficiently this on going problem, by carrying out a study to prepare the Master Plan of an appropriate storm water drainage system for the most critical parts of the Governorate. Design criteria for this drainage system are already fixed, and the provisions for drainage shall cater with estimated 1/50 years flood.
